Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming Out in May

We are officially done with the first third of 2017, which means we are entering one of biggest movie times of the year; summer movie season.  It’s that time of the year when big budgeted sequels, effects-driven movies are released.  May kicks it off with such movies, though this month doesn’t look as strong as it has in the past.  Here are my picks for the most exciting movies coming out in May.

5 – SNATCHED (Jonathon Levine, May 12)

Some people don’t like Amy Schumer.  I am not one of those people.  I think she’s genuinely hilarious and her latest Netflix stand-up was terrific.  Snatched pairs her with the legendary Goldie Hawn and the two play a mother-daughter team trying to escape kidnappers while on an exotic vacation.  Schumer and Hawn look to have some great chemistry and Wanda Sykes is also in it, which is always nice to see, and the film is directed by Jonathon Levine, the man behind the excellent 50/50 (2011) and the enjoyable The Night Of (2015).  This could be a disaster, but I have faith that Schumer, Hawn, and Levine will offer up plenty of laughs and clumsy action.

4 – PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES (Joachim Rønning & Espen Sandberg, May 26)

I don’t know why these movies are still being made.  I was pretty much done with the series after the first one, but now we’re on the fifth.  Besides the fact that Johnny Depp’s iconic Captain Jack Sparrow is a great character that Depp always crushes, there are other reasons why this one intrigues me.  First, Javier Bardem stars as the films villain and that in itself is awesome.  Bardem knows how to be menacing and terrifying, as seen in No Country for Old Men (2007) and Skyfall (2012) and he’s just a great actor.  Also, the directors are relatively unknowns who gained noticed by their 2012 foreign film, Kon-Tiki, which was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars.  I think these two can bring a new vision and style to the franchise that has only worked within the Hollywood system and hopefully revive this franchise.

3 – BAYWATCH (Seth Gordon, May 25)

What would a summer movie season be without Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson?  For the last five years, Johnson has starred in movies that have grossed over $100 million over the summer season, including surprise hits like San Andreas (2015).  Baywatch will probably be the next film on Johnson’s blockbuster list, and this time, he gets some help from hilarious heartthrob Zac Efron, meta humor, explosive action, and, in typical Baywatch fashion, the bevy of beautiful women running in slow motion and wear swimsuits that are probably a size to small.  Trying to replicate the success of 21 Jump Street (2012), Baywatch looks to be the raunchy comedy hit of the summer.

2 – GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 (James Gunn, May 5)

Like every summer, Marvel kicks off the summer movie season.  This year, they kick it off with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is the perfect movie to start off this summer.  Having already seen the movie (you can read my review here), I can tell you that this movie is a lot of fun.  The cast is terrific, picking up right where they left off from the first one, as well as adding some new faces.  It features a lot of bright colors, new planets, explosive action, a dope soundtrack, and plenty of laughs.  If you want more of my thoughts on this movie, check out my review, but I will say that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 kicks the summer off right.

1 – ALIEN: COVENANT (Ridley Scott, May 19)

I ranked Alien: Covenant at number eleven on my Most Anticipated Movies of 2017 list (full list here).  Director Ridley Scott returned to the Alien franchise in 2012 with Prometheus, which received lukewarm reviews, but was mildly entertaining and set us up for future films.  Alien: Covenant looks like Scott is heading back to his Alien (1979) roots.  This movie looks absolutely horrifying, as we follow a group of explorers as they travel to another planet and are then hunted by the xenomorphs.  The cast is spectacular, the xenomorph looks scarier than ever, and Scott’s direction looks to be in top form.  This has the possibility to be the best sci-fi movie of the summer, the best franchise entry of the summer, the best horror movie of the summer, and the very best movie of the summer, which is why it lands at number one on this list.
